Veteran’s day was on Wednesday and as you know we had a big ceremony on the concourse to honor our veterans. We were all called out of our classes during first period to go and watch. First we listened to a presentation about our veterans and the origins of veteran’s day from all the way back in World War I. We had an actual veteran and his daughter present this information to us from a podium that was constructed at the top of the concourse stairs. I thought that it was actually very interesting to hear about where a holiday that we celebrate every year came from. I had no idea that it was so old. Then they had a show of hands of kids who had family members who were currently serving in the military. The band played some songs and then the choir sang the national anthem. Some kids were being jerks and talking during all of this which was pretty rude because we were trying to honor the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our country from invaders. They also did a cool thing where they had the band play all of the theme songs of the different military branches like the army, the navy, and the air force. When the band played their theme the people who where serving or had served in that branch stood up. They ended the ceremony with Ms. Flagg singing Taps after we had a moment of silence during which a bunch of kids talked followed by a silent dismissal. |
